Swimming workouts

In swimming, almost all training sessions are organized the same way: a succession of sets. Very often, a workout begins with a warm-up and ends with a cool-down. In between, it includes specific work and/or main sets.

For each series, the coach will communicate a whole range of settings and improves details, so that the swimmer knows exactly what to do. The same applies to the OpenSwim app.
When our coaches create a new workout, they define the parameters for each series, which must be respected in order to achieve the targeted goal. We're talking about: stroke, intensity, distance, time, equipment... and much more!

This data can be confusing. Especially if you're a beginner, or have never seen a structured swim workout. Here, we want to start from scratch and clear up all possible doubts.  

How series are displayed on OpenSwim

This is what you see on the app. If some data is missing, it is not an error, it is one less constraint. You are therefore free to swim as you wish.

For this series, the swimmer must swim 4 x 100 m. As the description specifies, each 25 m is different. The definitions of each drill are available via the “definitions” button if needed.

The suggested time per 100 m is 2 minutes 30 seconds, with 30 seconds of rest between each repetition. After the fourth rep, the swimmer will rest for 30 seconds, before taking an additional minute of rest, then moving on to the next set.

Understanding sets of a swimming workout

At a minimum, a series consists of: 

  • a stroke. It can be one stroke type, such as front crawl, or a combination, such as mix or IM, or technique for drills.
  • a distance. Swim once or several times, depending on the number of repetitions.
  • a number of repetitions
  • an intensity. To know what tempo to keep.

In addition to this, a coach, depending on his needs, will provide further details on: 

  • a swim time. This is the swim time per repetition, not for the entire series.
  • a rest time. This is the rest time after each repetition, not for the entire series.
  • equipments. To use on one or several reps. 
  • a description. To give you details about some reps that require specific work.
  • recovery time. At the end of the series, after all reps.

And remember, a data not displayed means one less constraint!
