Not everyone experiences heat and cold the same way. In this article, we\u2019ll look at two questions almost all of us have asked at least once:\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-edd0fab elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"edd0fab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Do I Feel Warm in the Air but Cold in the Water at the Same Temperature? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8eb3e8f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8eb3e8f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In reality, we don\u2019t directly feel hot or cold \u2014 what we feel are thermal exchanges.\nTo put it simply: when your body loses heat, you feel cold; when it absorbs heat, you feel warm. The greater the energy exchange, the stronger the sensation.<\/p><p>So, the feeling of hot or cold is proportional to what\u2019s called the heat flux. There are three types of heat transfer: conduction, radiation, and convection.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae9c4a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae9c4a2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Conduction<\/h3><p>This refers to heat transfer by direct contact \u2014 for example: your body touching air or water, your hand on a hot stove, or your tongue on an ice cream.<\/p><p>The rate of heat transfer by conduction depends on the temperature difference between your body and the surrounding environment, and on a factor called the heat transfer coefficient.<\/p><p>The higher this coefficient, the faster the energy exchange \u2014 meaning you feel hot or cold more intensely.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The coefficient of heat exchange in water is much higher<\/span>than in air. That\u2019s why energy transfers (and therefore cooling) happen much faster in 24\u00b0C (75\u00b0F) water than in 24\u00b0C (75\u00b0F) air.<\/p><p>The heat conduction coefficient in air is very low \u2014 which is why air is considered an insulator. Of the three types of heat transfer, conduction is the least efficient.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-148cd19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"148cd19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Radiation (Electromagnetic Heat Transfer)<\/h3><p>When we\u2019re exposed to a strong electromagnetic source, the heat transfer becomes much more efficient. That\u2019s why infrared heaters can keep you warm on a restaurant patio even on a cold day.<\/p><p>Similarly, when skiing, it might be \u20133\u00b0C (27\u00b0F) outside, yet you can comfortably eat lunch on a sunny terrace thanks to solar radiation \u2014 especially if you\u2019re sheltered from the wind (see convection below).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bf723e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8bf723e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Convection<\/h3><p>This is the fastest form of heat transfer.\nContinuing with the ski example \u2014 you might feel warm in the sun, but if the sunlight fades and a light breeze picks up, you\u2019ll feel cold almost instantly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30393a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"30393a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e54ef88 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e54ef88\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b2b7a5f\" data-id=\"b2b7a5f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef0bc9e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ef0bc9e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Do I Feel Cold When I Get Out of the Water?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f700c0b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f700c0b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When you leave the water or get out of the shower, if you don\u2019t dry off quickly, the droplets left on your skin start to evaporate. That evaporation process uses your body\u2019s heat, which creates a cooling sensation.<\/p><p>This is also why spraying or immersing yourself in water helps you cool down on very hot days \u2014 the evaporation effect cools the body. That\u2019s exactly how misting sprays work.\nHowever, in cold conditions, it\u2019s important to dry off quickly and layer up (the \u201conion technique\u201d) to prevent body cooling.<\/p><p>That\u2019s also why water polo players who frequently get in and out of the pool during matches wear thick, absorbent robes between periods \u2014 to keep their body heat in.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chaque individu est diff\u00e9rent et les ressentis varient.
